CBD’s effect on the brain has been the subject of much controversy as people share anecdotal evidence on how CBD alleviated their anxiety, insomnia, and depression. In recent research, scientists found another importance of CBD as a substance that can effectively help in the faster absorption of other drugs which usually does not gain entry in the brain.
In research published March 13 this year, it was theorized that the addition of CBD (cannabidiol) to drug-carrying lipid nanocapsules can help the latter gain access in the blood-brain barrier. The experiment conducted by researchers from the Complutense University of Madrid and The Open University in the UK, is still on its first stages and is tested on real mice, and using the lab model of the blood-brain barrier.
Initial findings stipulated that adding CBD yields better results than existing methods. This is a significant breakthrough in medicine as doctors have to contend with this challenging obstacle of gaining access in the blood-brain barrier to treat diseases of the central nervous system.
This is also a significant finding as lipid nanocapsules are used as a cancer treatment particularly present in the chemotherapy drugs that have to be injected into the patient’s bloodstreams. These nanoparticles can easily reach most organs of the body except the brain with its blood-brain barrier. When this happens, treating brain tumors or multiple sclerosis can be hard to achieve.
How did scientists scientifically found out the effect of CBD in the effective absorption of lipid nanocapsules in the brain? Based on the methodology of the study posted online, the researchers packaged nanocapsules with a fluorescent molecule for easier visibility even when inside the body. During the experiments, it was found that the setup containing CBD-displaying nanocarriers have passed through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) with the presence of more fluorescent molecules that passed through. This still holds true when the CBD-nanocapsules were injected into healthy mice which are seen with the presence of fluorescent molecules in the animal’s brain.
Overall, the CBD-nanocapsules is six times more effective at being absorbed by the blood-brain barrier. This method is compared to G-technology, another kind of nanoparticle delivery system also currently being tested for its effectiveness to gain entry in the blood-brain barrier.
The researchers credited this development to CBD’s positive reaction to the body’s endocannabinoids, a process that occurs naturally. This is the reason why it has the power to influence biological processes particularly in improving one’s appetite, mood modification, and memory enhancement.
The research still needs further validation but the improvement brought about by plant-based cannabinoids like CBD in the absorption of nanocapsules is one big step that may lead to potential curious for serious brain diseases and cancers. However, future clinical trials may face hurdles as it involves animal testing involving animal cruelty.
Earlier studies confirmed that CBD has anxiolytic properties as it influences the 5-HT1A receptors involved in serotonin transmission. When this happens, anxiety is reduced with the transmission of more serotonin to the brain.
CBD is also eyed to aid opioid addiction treatment. Earlier experiments should CBD disrupts opioid receptors and thus can alter the brain’s reward mechanism when it accepts opium and other drugs. CBD also influences the secretion of happy hormones, dopamine, and Andamadide or ‘bliss’ hormones responsible for human joy.
Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, the discoverer of Anandamide, claimed that CBD prevents the breakdown of anandamide reuptake and breakdown. With CBD, the person will feel more long-lasting happiness and bliss with an increase of endocannabinoid levels. Other studies also said that CBD can also enlarge the hippocampus and thus helps stimulate the growth neurons that in turn improve a person’s memory and help curb anxiety.
